Allen Community College Board of Trustees are expected to take action Tuesday evening on a recommendation to continue with a four day a week class schedule, which was adopted on a trial basis for the 2024-25 academic year.

Surveys conducted among students during the fall and spring semester indicated strong support for the four day schedule.

Surveys of faculty and staff also indicate support for the plan with a few caveats and suggestions for improvement, among which are improving coordination of hybrid and off-season courses and keeping key student services open and faculty available for meetings or support on Fridays.

Among concerns expressed in the surveys were issues involving student-athlete welfare, compressed academic time, and institutional readiness.

Seven other Kansas Community Colleges have gone to a four day class schedule on their main campus, locally including Coffeyville, Fort Scott and Labette.

Trustees this evening will consider a campus security officer proposal, allowing for fireworks at the KC Iola Hormingas baseball game July 1, and conduct the president’s six-month review. Executive sessions are also planned on personnel and matters involving financial affairs or trade secrets of third parties. Their meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Ambler Board Room.
