ALLEN/ANDERSON COUNTY, Kan. — One city council seat in Iola and two in Humboldt will have to be filled by write-in in the November general election. As the filing deadline passed at noon Monday, there was not a filing for Ward 1 on the Iola City Council for Position 3 in Ward 1 or Position 4 in Ward 2.
In Iola, the only contested seat on the council is Ward 3, where Myra Gleason filed to run against Incumbent Nicholas Lohman, the only incumbent to seek election, Mark Peters filed for Ward 2 now held by Joel Wicoff, and Jeremiah Ivy filed in Ward 4, held by Benedikt Middleton Josiah D’Albini had earlier announced he would not seek another term from Ward 1.
Iola Mayor Steve French is unopposed in his re-election bid, as is Nobby Davis in Humboldt. Blake McDaniel and John Lassman were the other council filings in Humboldt, both unopposed.
Voters in Iola USD 257 will have five candidates to choose from for the three seats up this year. Incumbents Robin Griffin-Lohman, John Masterson and John D. Wilson will be joined on the November general election ballot by Nathan Cunningham and Lisa Wicoff. One person filed for each available position in Humboldt USD 258 and Marmaton Valley USD 256.
White-ins will also be needed to fill two of five council spots in Bassett, mayor and three of five council positions in Elsmore, one of two Gas City Council spots, and for mayor and Council in Savonburg. Six candidates seek three City Council positions in La Harpe and three seek two seats in Moran where there’s a single candidate for Mayor.
In Anderson County, Garnett voters will have a three way race for City Commissioner in November. Justin Thompson, Heather Wadewitz, and Susan Wettstein filed for the seat now held by Mark Locke.
Two of the three seats up in Garnett USD 365 will have to be filled by write-in, as the only filing was by Gina Witherspoon for Position 6, with no filings for positions 4 and 5. There was one filing for each of the three positions up in Crest USD 479.
Write-ins will be needed to fill mayoral positions and Greeley and Lone Elm, all five council spots in Greeley, Kincaid and Lone Elm, for one of two council spots in Colony and three of five in Westphalia.
