The Hutchinson High volleyball team dropped its first AVCTL Division 1 match of the season on Tuesday at the Salthawk Activity Center, but the Salthawks bounced back to salvage a split of their two matches.
Hutchinson opened the night 25-17, 25-14 loss to Maize South, but then bumped off Maize 25-18, 26-24.
The split further muddied the Class 5A West Substate standings. While Bishop Carroll and Maize South are comfortable in finishing in the top four and hosting a substate, the battle for the final two spots is jam packed.
Hays is third at 20-9 (.690), Andover Central is fourth at 22-10 (.688), and Kapaun Mount Carmel is fifth at 21-10 (.677). Hutchinson is right behind at 18-9 (.667), a mere .023 percentage points away from third and .021 points from fourth.
