The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team earned its third victory over a nationally ranked opponents on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.
Sophomore Kyrell Shaw scored 32 points to pace the Blue Dragons to an 83-77 win over No. 18 Coffeyville.
The Blue Dragons improved to 10-6 overall and again climbed to .500 in Jayhawk Conference play at 5-5. The Dragons have a bye on Saturday and return to action next Wednesday, January 14 at Pratt. Coffeyville slipped to 11-4 overall and 5-4 in league play.
Hutchinson is now 3-1 this season against nationally ranked opponents with victories over No. 18 Coffeyville, No. 21 Dodge City and No. 15 Barton.
Shaw had 18 of his 32 points in the opening half for this third 30-point game of the season. He became the first Blue Dragon since Matt Mayers in 2020-21 to have back-to-back 30-point games. Shaw scored 32 points against Colby on Saturday.
Shaw was 8 of 17 shooting from the field against Coffeyville, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and going 12 of 12 from the free-throw line.
The Blue Dragons had four players score in double figures against the Red Ravens. Sophomores Bobby Cannon and Daleron Thomas had 15 points each. Cannon hit three 3-pointers and added four rebounds, two assists, a steal and blocked shot. Thomas was 6 of 9 shooting with two 3-point goals.
Hutchinson shot 50.8 percent for the game (31 of 61), hitting 9 of 21 from 3-point range and 22 of 27 from the free-throw line. The Dragons owned a 40-34 rebounding advantage, getting a career-high 11 boards from sophomore Anthony Alston.
The Dragons had 23 assists – sophomore Lolo Rudolph had eight assists – 11 turnovers, 10 steals and seven blocked shots. Freshman Chudier Dorar had five rejections.
Coffeyville was held to 39.4 percent overall shooting (26 of 66). The Ravens hit 11 of 34 3-pointers and 14 of 22 from the free-throw line. They had 13 turnovers.
Jack Sorrell had 19 points to lead the Red Ravens. Ulysses Webb had 12 points and Ka’Bari Lewis had 11 points.
The Blue Dragons scored the first five points of the game and never relinquished the lead. A Rudolph three-point play with 15:50 to go in the first half upped the lead to 14-7. The lead grew to 10 points at 23-13 after a Thomas free throw with 12:18 to go. Thomas then drilled a 3-pointer for a 26-14 lead with 10:53 remaining in the first half.
Shaw sank a 3-pointer with 7:49 to play in the first half to build Hutchinson’s largest lead of the game of 15 at 36-21. The Ravens then had a 6-0 run to pull within nine points. Shaw’s layup with 1:57 to go pushed the Dragon lead back to 48-36, but the Ravens scored the final six points of the half to slice the Hutchinson lead in half to 48-42 at halftime.
The Dragons shot 50.8 percent in the half to Coffeyville’s 44.1 percent.
The Ravens got the game back to a five-point deficit at 53-48 with 17 minutes to play in the second half. The Dragons answered with a 20-4 run over the next 7 1/2 minutes to take control of the game. An Alston layup started the surge. Shaw closed the run with a layup following a Coffeyville turnover and Hutchinson led 73-52 with 8:32 remaining in the game.
The Blue Dragons outscored Coffeyville 45-35 in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the field. The Dragons were 12 of 13 from the foul line in the second stanza.
