HUTCHINSON, Kan. — This afternoon, at 2 p.m., Hutchinson Fire Department (HFD) responded to a structure fire at 427 Urban St. First arriving crews found a small single-story structure with smoke rolling out of the attic vents.
According to a statement from HFD Division Chief of Operations Jeremy Unruh, crews forced entry into the home and were met with heavy smoke and heat. They had to back out of the structure and readjust their tactics due to heat and visibility. The fire was found in the center of the home, extending to the attic and crawl space. The occupants were not home at the time of the fire.
No injuries were reported and the fire was extinguished, which was difficult due to the weather conditions. Fire crews had to work with windy conditions and 102-degree heat.
Investigators are still working the scene according to the fire department.
The following agencies helped assist: Black Hills Energy, Reno County EMS, Reno County Emergency Communications, 1800Boardup, and the Hutchinson Police Department.
