McPherson and Saline County Gain Population, Reno County Population Declines

Population estimates for 2024 from the Kansas Division of Budget indicate a sizable uptick in population. The data indicates a population increase of 30,600 people from 2023 to 2024, ten times that shown in the prior year.

The city of McPherson was one of some three dozen cities in Kansas to see a population increase of more than 100 people in the past year, up 162 to an estimated population of 14,068. Lindsborg gained 24 people with their estimated population now 3,835.

McPherson County as a whole saw a population increase of 243 people bringing total population to 30,334. While population declined by one in Canton and three in Galva, other cities in McPherson County saw their population go up. Canton’s population is listed at 664, Galva at 826, Inman at 1.328, Marquette at 596, Moundridge at 1,965, and Windom at 90.

Another city that saw a triple digit increase in population was Salina, up 317 to 46,109. Saline County as a whole saw their population increase by 498 people to 53, 098.

Dickinson County added 176 residents for 2024 to 18,621, with Abilene gaining 54 residents to 6,501. Ottawa County added 35 percent, bringing their population to 5,818 with Minneapolis gaining three people to make their estimated population 1,939.

Ellsworth County saw a decline in population of 41 to 6.316, with a drop of 17 in the city of Ellsworth to 3,116. Lincoln County saw a gain of eight residents to 2,928, while Marion County dropped 20 residents to 11,690. Hillsboro saw a loss of 15 residents to 2,673 while Marion lost eight to bring their population to 1,890.

Harvey County increased its population by an estimated 1238 people, to 33,642. Newton increased population by 69 to 18,323 with Hesston up nine to 3,478. Rice County saw their population increase by 24 to 9,284, with Lyons increasing by one to 3.499 and Sterling by 34 to 2,309.

Reno County saw a net population decline of 80 to 61,147. Hutchinson was one of a dozen Kansas cities to see a more than 100 people drop in population, down 101 to 39,561. Population in Buhler was unchanged at 1.315 as well as in South Hutchinson at 2,506 and Haven at 1,168 while Nickerson dropped one person to 1,052.
