HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One man is in custody after a pursuit that resulted in a crash and a shot being filed Monday afternoon just east of downtown Hutchinson.
According to the Hutchinson Police Department, agents from the Kansas Department of Corrections Task Force located James Smith, 36, who was wanted on felony warrants, in the area of 11th and Severance. Before making contact Smith fled from Hutchinson Police who did not pursue him at that point due to prior fleeing history.
He was later seen near 12th and Milcon armed with a handgun and fled on foot later getting back into his vehicle after which the Kansas Highway Patrol initiated a chase that ended at 4th and Maple where he struck a vehicle and then fled on foot firing a shot from his gun. The driver of that vehicle sustained minor injuries.
He was apprehended shortly thereafter.
Smith was booked into the Reno County Correctional facility with no bond on multiple charges including aggravated battery, possessing a firearm as a felon and criminal discharge of it, felony flee and elude, drug possession and three felony warrants.
