Wrestling Roundup: Lyons Boys 1st at Hesston Invite, Girls 3rd

The Lyons boys wrestling team captured the championship at the 52nd annual Hesston Invitational Saturday.

The Lyons girls wrestling team placed third out of 18 teams in the girls competition.

Lyons’ Jace Grizzle won his weight class and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Boys Wrestler.

Easton Benavidez and Marius Lee also were first-place champions.

Placing second for the Lions were Ismael Chico, Xander Young and Landon Lewis. Jordan Gomez, Juan Becerra and Jackson Smith placed third and Ramon Villanueava finished fourth.

In the girls competition, Lyons wrestlers Taylor Baxter and Jacynn Boeken captured first place in their weight classes.

Addison Morgan placed second and Carsyn Winger was third. Mia Pulley and Austyn Bland placed fourth.

Fairfield High School’s Kyle Haskins and Lane Schwab both posted 3-2 records in the girls competition at the Hesston Invitational. Haskins placed fourth and Schwab fifth.

Nickerson’s Liz Dick Wins Class at Great Bend High School Christmas Bash

The Nickerson High School girls and boys wrestling teams were in action Saturday at three tournaments.

The Panther girls competed at the Great Bend High School Christmas Clash. the varsity boys competed at the 52nd annual Hesston Invitational and the Nickerson junior varsity participated in the Goddard JV Invitational.

Liz Dick, ranked first at 235 pounds in All-Class girls and Class 3-2-1A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, captured first place. She posted a 4-0 record. Dick pinned one of her opponents in 11 seconds for the meet’s fastest pin.

Nickerson’s Brooklyn Schneider placed 10th at 130 pounds out of 25 wrestlers. She was pinned in the ninth-place match.

Nickerson’s Bella Brinkley, who was competing in her first varsity matches of the season, placed 15th out of 32 wrestlers. She won her final match with a pin at the 2:19 mark.

There were 35 teams competing in the Great Bend Christmas Clash.

The Nickerson High School varsity boys wrestling team finished sixth out of 19 teams at the Hesston Invitational with 66.5 points.

Nickerson entered seven wrestlers and all seven placed.

Kris Monroe placed first, Aiden Brinkley third, Conner Bower third, Aaden Vedder fifth, Riley Spurlock fifth, Evan Trostle seventh and Kobane Swift seventh.

No information was available on the Nickerson JV boys wrestling team.
