HUTCHINSON, Kan. (BlueDragonSports.com) – The No. 18-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team posted its first shutout of the season on Wednesday, defeating the Dodge City Conquistadors 3-0 in a KJCCC matchup at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.
The Blue Dragons improved to 3-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 (7 points) in the KJCCC. Hutchinson now faces a nationally ranked matchup on the road Saturday at No. 10 Butler in El Dorado. Dodge City is now 0-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the league.
The Dragons scored all three goals in the first half, the second and third markers coming 3 minutes, 31 second apart late in the half.
Sophomore Kaylee Monk‘s first career goal was the game winner, scoring in the 24th minute of the opening half after peppering home a loose ball off a deflection from 15 yards out.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Edwards had a goal in her fourth-consecutive game, scoring from short range in the 40th minute.
Freshman Gabriella Carvalho also notched her first career goal in the 43rd minute.
Freshman Anastasia Pokrandt had two assists and sophomore Katharina Marx had the third assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Karsyn Slothower (3-0-0) posted her 15th career victory and eighth career shutout with five saves. Slothower faced one difficult Dodge City scoring opportunity, but made the save in the first half. Slothower made 4 of her 5 saves in the opening half.
Slothower is now in sole possession of eighth place on the Blue Dragon career shutout list, breaking a tie with Clara Burgmuller.
The Blue Dragons’ first goal was set up by a corner kick. The Dragons had a header and a follow shot legally blocked by Dodge City defenders, but Monk stepped in and blasted the loose ball past Conquistador keeper Ana Ramirez-Cortes for a 1-0 lead with 21:17 to play in the first half.
The Dragons took a 2-0 lead when Pokrandt’s free kick was deflected by a Dodge City defender right to the foot of Edwards, who scored from eight yards out with 5:56 remaining in the first half.
Three and a half minutes later, the Dragons made it 3-0 when Marx made a strong run down the left side of the box and deftly slid a pass to her right to a wide-open Carvalho, who scored into an empty net with 2:25 to go in the opening half.
The Blue Dragons have now win 28 consecutive matches against Dodge City and are 29-1 overall, 27-0 in KJCCC-designated games. Hutchinson’s shutout is the 20th in series history with Dodge City.
