SIOUX CITY, Iowa (BethanySwedes.com) – The Bethany College Swedes were on the road, Friday, November 1st to take on the Briar Cliff University Chargers in the Chargers Classic. Tipoff scheduled for 8pm. Swedes fell 51-89. The Swedes then took on the Midland University Warriors on Saturday, November 2nd at 8am, where they earned their first win, 80-77.
1st: Slow start for both teams as neither hit double digits until there was less than four minutes on the clock. The Chargers led the entire first quarter but the Swedes were within reach until 3:12 when the Chargers went on a ten-point unanswered run ending the quarter, 6-22.
2nd: Unfortunately for the Swedes, the second quarter would look similar as they were only able to score an additional ten points to the Chargers additional nineteen, ending the first half 16-41.
3rd: Coming out of halftime, the Swedes made adjustments and would go on to score twenty-four points in the 3rd quarter. Unfortunately, Bethany wouldn’t be able to contain the Chargers offense and they would go on to score twenty-one points of their own. The score going into the 4th quarter, 40-62 with the Chargers up by twenty-two.
4th: The final quarter would be tough for the Swedes who once again struggled to score, only able to earn eleven points while the Chargers scored twenty-seven. Final score 51-89.
Notable stats include, Janae Black-Harmon with 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 17 points, Ray Richardson with 4 assists, Jaden Newfarmer with 4 steals and 8 points, and Renee Ramoni with 6 rebounds and 8 points.
Next up for the Swedes were the Midland University Warriors. The Swedes were within reach throughout the first half but took over in the second half to win the game by three late in the 4th quarter.
1st: Bethany took an early lead against the Warriors and were up by four, 6-2 with 8:02 left in the first quarter. Midland would then close the gap and take the lead until 2:47 on the clock when the Swedes took it back, 15-14. Unfortunately, the Warriors would knock down two three-pointers to finished the quarter ahead by two, 18-20.
2nd: Down by two, Bethany would try and play catch-up with Midland after the Warriors scored early in the second quarter, extending their lead to five, 21-26 with just under seven minutes to play in the first half. The Swedes would find themselves down by ten with two minutes to play and would try to chip away at the deficient before halftime. The score heading into the break, Swedes-34, Warriors-42.
3rd: The third quarter marked the shift in momentum as the Swedes lit up the court and would score twenty-five points to the Warriors’ nineteen points. With the help of Jaden Newfarmer, scoring twelve points in the quarter alone, the Swedes closed the gap and were two at the end of the third quarter, 59-61.
4th: Midland came of the gate with a field goal and a three-pointer, giving them a lead of seven with 8:52 left to play. Unfazed, Bethany continued to put their offense to work and cut the lead down. At the 4:41, the Swedes would again be within one possession of the Warriors, 70-73. It wouldn’t be until 2:30 left to play for the Swedes take the lead at 76-75. Bethany maintained the one-point lead until Kylie Dunn hit a field goal with eight seconds on the clock, giving the Swedes a three-point advantage. The Warriors attempted a last second three-point shot but were unsuccessful. Swedes win 80-77.
