The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball closed out its regular season home schedule with a 76-63 win over the Pratt Beavers for the 14th Annual Pinkout and Sophomore Recognition Day Saturday at the Sports Arena.
Freshman Kordell Williams dropped a season-high 26 points to lead Hutchinson to its third win in a row.
Hutchinson improves to 14-15 overall, and 9-14 in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchinson finishes the regular season home slate with an 8-8 record. Pratt drops to 7-22 on the season, and 4-20 in conference play.
Hutchinson and Pratt split the season series. Hutchinson will close out the regular season on the road at Fort Hays Tech Northwest Wednesday, March 4th at 7:30 p.m. MST, 8:30 p.m. CST. The game will be played at Max Jones Fieldhouse.
Williams went 8 for 10 from the field and drilled a trio of 3-pointers. Williams’ 21 of his 26 points came in the second half of play.
Sophomores Bobby Cannon and Asher Boney were the other Blue Dragons in double figures. Cannon had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Boney had 11 points and three three-pointers, including two 3-pointers to start the game.
As a team, Hutchinson shot 48.3% (29-of-60) from the field and 28% from three-point range (7-of-25). The Dragons connected on 11-of-15 free throws and outscored Pratt in the paint 38–24, in points off turnovers 16–10, and in fastbreak points 19–10.
Pratt as a team shot 35.4% from the floor, going 23 of 65, also knocking down nine three-pointers on 29 attempts, for 31%. Pratt got to the free-throw line 10 times, knocking down 8. Pratt dominated Hutchinson off the bench, scoring 31 points to Hutchinson’s 14. The Beavers did outrebound Hutch 37-35.
Pratt was led in scoring by Hunter Vaughn with 12 – all of his points coming in the second half. Jayvn Davis came off the bench and scored eight points.
Hutchinson opened the game with a 13-2 run and took control from start to finish and never trailed all afternoon. Pratt trimmed the lead to eight points, but Hutchinson’s defense held strong, limiting the Beavers to just 19 first-half points.
In the second half, the Blue Dragons extended their lead to as many as 30 points after a Williams three-pointer with 10:57 left. Pratt responded with a 15–0 run late in the game to cut the Blue Dragon lead to 12 with under two minutes to go, but Hutchinson held on to secure the win.
Before the game, Hutchinson recognized eight players for Sophomore Day: Lolo Rudolph, Kyrell Shaw, Bobby Cannon, Jonathan Ogunfuye, Daleron Thomas, Dilen Miller, and Asher Boney.
Game Notes – Kordell Williams‘ 26 points is now his season high, and he eclipsed double-digits for the third time this season. This is the first 20-point game of the season. Bobby Cannon scored in double figures for the 22nd time this season. Cannon also recorded his third double-double of the season, the first since November 1st against NEO. Asher Boney notched his ninth game in double figures. Hutchinson extends its winning streak to three, the longest since October 31st through November 4th.
