Wichita State University has officially approved a new name for the stadium formerly known for decades as “Cessna Stadium.”

The venue will now be called “Crossland Stadium,” recognizing Crossland Construction Company’s continued partnership with the university on multiple campus renovation projects.

The name change was approved during the May 20 Kansas Board of Regents meeting as part of a broader set of university updates and restructuring plans.

University President Richard Muma said the designation reflects Wichita State’s appreciation for Crossland Construction’s impact on projects throughout Wichita State’s campus and beyond.

The stadium, once home to Wichita State football, has already undergone major reconstruction on the east side and around the track and field areas.

According to university officials, work on the west side is expected to continue over the next two years. Planned additions include upgraded press boxes, suites, locker rooms and concession areas.

The facility is now primarily used for track and field events and is preparing to host one of the nation’s largest high school track meets Friday and Saturday.

Athletes from across Kansas travel to Wichita for the annual state championships.

University leaders have also discussed the possibility of future women’s soccer events being held at the stadium.

The Board of Regents meeting also included approval for several academic program changes at Wichita State.

The university’s human performance studies department, including faculty and staff, will move into the College of Health Professions.

The athletic training program will also transition into the Department of Physical Therapy.

In addition, Wichita State announced that its cybersecurity program will move from the School of Computing into the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

University leaders said the change is intended to strengthen collaboration and improve alignment between engineering and cybersecurity curriculum.
