WICHITA, Kan. (GoShockers.com) – A familiar face will be back on the Wichita State bench, as head men’s basketball coach Paul Mills named former Shocker P.J. Couisnard an assistant coach.

Mills officially announced Couisnard’s hiring on Monday, May 12, 2025.

“I’ve been able to follow P.J.’s journey since his high school days playing at Jack Yates in Houston to Wichita State to coaching in Texas for these past 20 years,” Mills said. “He has made a positive impact everywhere he has been. He is a tremendous coach. More importantly, he is passionate about Wichita State. His experience and success playing for the Shockers gives him a unique perspective. He will add immediate value to our basketball program and I’m glad, after all these years as a player, that he will continue to give his talents as a coach.”

Couisnard, a Houston native, makes his return to Wichita State after a standout playing career for the Shockers from 2003-08 that included a 2006 Missouri Valley Conference title and Sweet 16 appearance. He scored more than 1,300 career points and is the only Shocker to record 1,300 points, 600 rebounds, 300 assists, 98 blocks and 140 steals.

Following his playing days at Wichita State, Couisnard returned to Houston where he built one of the more successful AAU programs, Cooz Elite. Since 2018, he has also served as the boys basketball coach at Legacy School of Sport Sciences, where he’s coached several NCAA Division I prospects.

Couisnard graduated with a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Wichita State in 2008.

His wife, Tiana Jones-Couisnard, ran track at Wichita State. He has five children: Pierre, Prince, Taliyah, Pailyn and Taylor.
