WICHITA, Kan. (SCWarriors.com) – In a stellar performance at the Wichita State University Coach Wilson Invitational held at the Heskett Center, the Sterling College Warriors showcased their prowess across multiple track and field events on Jan. 30 – Feb. 1. The team competed against a host of schools and emerged with significant achievements, including setting new season records and securing qualifications for upcoming national competitions.
Daryen Jefferson starred for the Warriors by setting a new school record in the 5000m run, clocking an impressive time of 16:20.50, finishing seventh in the finals. This monumental effort also earned Jefferson a spot at the NCCAA national track meet. In another event, Jefferson clinched first place in the 1000m run with a time of 2:39.66.
Maurice Gray highlighted his versatility in the field events by securing sixth place in both the long and triple jump, the latter marking a season best with a leap of 13.5m (44-3.5).
The meet was also significant for other Warriors who posted personal bests. Janie Perico and Audrey Blake both recorded season-best times in the one mile run, with Perico finishing at 6:03.44 and Blake at 7:12.04. In the field events, Chloe Schmidt threw a season-best distance of 35-5.25 in the shot put, emphasizing the depth of talent within the Warriors’ roster.
In the men’s shot put, Blake Robertson and Malachi Bell finished ninth and 18th with throws of 13.75m (45-1.25) and 12.5m (41-0.25) respectively. The pair also competed in the weight throw where Bell placed 11th with a throw of 13.51m (44-4) and Robertson threw a season best 11.69m (38-4.25) to finish 18th.
The Warriors are now gearing up for their next competition at the NCCAA Indoor Championships in Cedarville, Ohio, scheduled for Feb. 7-8. Following their recent successes, the team is poised for more standout performances as they continue their pursuit of excellence in track and field.
