Warriors Stay Perfect in KCAC with Win Over Avila

SHARE NOW

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (SCWarriors.com) – It was anything but normal as weather moved through Kansas City Saturday afternoon, delaying and then moving the game to a local high school that had lights to finish the game after dark. Sterling, in one of the hottest starts they have had in recent years, made the best of the situation and came away with a 4-2 victory over the Eagles. Sterling is now 4-0 in conference play to start the season.

The game made it ten minutes before the first delay. After about an hour and a half of down time, the coaches, officials and administration determined the best option was to move the game offsite from Avila University. After the game resumed, Avila appeared to be the hot team. Avila scored two goals in the first half. One in the 28th minute and another in the 39th minute. Sterling trailed 2-0 at the break.

Coach Nic Martinez must have made an incredible halftime speech and on the pitch adjustments to get his guys fired up and ready to play. Just 90 seconds into the second half, Juan Sepulveda found the net off a pass from Jonathan Torres for the first Warrior goal of the game. This cut the Eagle lead in half. Six minutes later, in the 53rd minute, hot footed Ruben Guzman took a ball from Angel Jimenez-Cortez to tie the game at 2. Then the lead change and game winner happened. Guzman received a ball from Torres and fired it into the back of the net giving Sterling their first lead of the night at 3-2. The Warriors weren’t finished as they tacked on a security goal by Jimenez-Cortes, once again on a pass from Torres. Sterling took care of business and scored 4 straight goals in the second to win the match 4-2.

Guzman led the way with 2 goals, Torres had 3 assists, Jimenez-Cortez had a goal and assist and Sepulveda contributed a goal as well. Guzman has had a hot week scoring 4 of his 6 goals this season in the last two games. Torres had his fourth multi-assist game and the three assists are the most in his young career.

Sterling plays a pair of home matches on Wednesday, September 27, and Saturday, September 30, against McPherson College and top seeded Oklahoma Wesleyan University, respectively. Both matches are set to kickoff at 4 pm.
