STERLING, Kan. – Sterling College defeated Barclay College 100-59 in the Gleason Center on Tuesday, Nov 4. This matchup marked the home opener for the Warriors, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. Sterling capitalized on 15 steals, converting turnovers into 39 points to secure the victory.

The Warriors began the first half with an effective offensive push, as Joseph Oparaeke and Damond Daniels combined for early points, establishing an initial lead. Sterling’s defensive efforts were equally impactful, forcing numerous turnovers by the Bears while generating quick steals, notably by Julian Smith and Chris Drake.

The team capitalized on these defensive stops with efficient scoring, including a 3-pointer from Monem Abboud and a series of successful shots by Cameron Bishop and Juan Gomez. Sterling maintained momentum throughout the half, showcasing strong bench contributions with 21 points, and held a significant advantage in points scored in the paint with 22. The half concluded with Sterling extending their lead, entering the break ahead 47-29.

Sterling began the second half strongly with Smith hitting an early three-pointer, extending the lead. The Warriors maintained pressure with effective shooting from the field, including several successful layups and three-pointers. Javion Reed and Oparaeke were instrumental in securing rebounds that limited Barclay’s scoring opportunities.

As the half progressed, Sterling capitalized on fast-break opportunities, widening the scoring gap. Ethan Wiley contributed significantly with a three-pointer, while Abboud added to the scoreboard with multiple successful shots beyond the arc. The Warriors’ defense remained tight, generating multiple steals and forcing turnovers, which kept the Bears’ scoring in check. Sterling closed the half with a commanding lead, wrapping up with a score of 100-59.

Smith led with 20 points, including four three-pointers, while also recording three steals and five rebounds. Abboud contributed 17 points, hitting five of eight from beyond the arc, and added two assists. Drake was active defensively, collecting three steals and five rebounds while Oparaeke led the Warriors in rebounding with eight. Cedric Wilson also came off the bench, posting 10 points and three rebounds.

With the win, the Warriors move to 1-2 on the season and are set to take on Midland University (0-3) on Wednesday, Nov. 12 in the Gleason Center at 7 p.m.
