LINDSBORG, Kan. (BethanySwedes.com) – Bethany College hosted the Baker University Wildcats, Tuesday, September 3rd in a weekday matchup featuring both JV and varsity squads. JV kicked off the night after losing the first set but taking the second and forcing a third and deciding set.
Set 1: The Swedes came out inconsistent in the first set and ultimately struggled to dig themselves out of a hole halfway into the set. Baker took the first set 25-13.
Set 2: The roles were reversed in the second set where Bethany would go on runs and the Wildcats would struggle to side-out. Once the Swedes had momentum, they ran away with the second set, finishing 25-16.
Set 3: The third and final set, which plays only to 15, was a battle for the Swedes who kept falling a few points behind but then catching back up to the Wildcats. After what looked like the opportunity to win it all, Bethany couldn’t quite finish it out. The Wildcats ending up taking the third set 17-15.
After the disappointing end to the JV game, Bethany turned their eyes to the varsity game, hoping to split the night. The Swedes would go into extra sets before the end of the match but couldn’t pull out the win. Baker would finish 3-1 over Bethany.
Set 1: The Swedes came out strong in the first set, while the Wildcats would struggle with unforced errors. Bethany set the trend early on and kept Baker from taking a lead. The Swedes would lead the first set by 3 before the Wildcats would tie it up, 4-4, 12-12, and finally 20-20. The final couple of points would be in Bethany’s favor who finished the set, 25-21.
Set 2: The roles were reversed for the Swedes in the second set after battling point for point early on. Baker took control of the set and forced the Swedes to chip away at their lead to tie up the set nearly five times, 7-7, 11-11, 12-12, 15-15, and 17-17. The Wildcats ended up extending their lead from that point in which the Swedes were unable to recover from. Baker took the second set 25-21.
Set 3: The third set would turn out to be the worst set of the game for the Swedes who struggled on serve receive and limiting errors with only 6 kills in the set. The Wildcats were able to dominate the net and picked apar Bethany’s defense. Baker would finish the third set 25-15.
Set 4: The start of the fourth and final set looked to be a repeat of the third for the Swedes but Bethany would improve slightly but not enough to force a fifth set over the Wildcats. Final score was 25-17, giving the win to the Wildcats.
