Volleyball Lady Warriors Open Up Season with a Win Against Langston

STERLING, Kan. (SCWarriors.com) – The Sterling College Lady Warriors started off the season with a 3-2 win over Langston University at home.

This back-and-forth battle came down to the wire with Langston winning the first and third set 27-25, Sterling winning the second set 25-23 and Langston winning the third set 25-22. The Lady Warriors outlasted the Lions and dominated the fourth and fifth sets, 25-13 and 15-8.

I was really proud of the girls for continuing to battle and not getting discouraged when we lost a couple of close sets early on,” head coach John Harding said. “I felt like we got better set by set and it was a great first match for us.”

Sophomore Chloe Schmidt was big for Sterling at the net, totaling 14 kills throughout the competition, junior Aliya McClanahan was right behind her with 10, followed by junior Caitlyn Belote who amassed eight kills and had a team high kill percentage of .238.

McClanahan was also a big defensive threat, with 12 total blocks, five of which were solo. Junior Keala Wilson also had some big blocks for the Lady Warriors with eight on the night. She also proved to be effective from the setter position with 39 assists.

In the back court, junior Taylor “Dru” Lindsey held down the fort with 22 digs followed by Kaleigh Guhr with 13 and Grace Battershell and Wilson both with 12.

Guhr also had a great night from behind the service line with four aces.

Sterling’s next match up will be Saturday, Aug. 23 in Peru, Neb. with a tri-match against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy at 4 pm and Peru State College.
