Volleyball Dragons Rally to Defeat Pratt in Four Sets

PRATT, Kan. (BlueDragonSports.com) – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team responded after seeing a late three-point first-set lead slip away to secure a Jayhawk Conference road victory on Wednesday at the Beaverdome.

Led by season highs in kills from freshmen outside hitters Atlyn Proctor and Brooke Galey, the Blue Dragons rallied to win the final three sets in a 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 victory over the Beavers.

The Blue Dragons extended their winning streak over Pratt that dates back to 2010 to 29 matches. This was all-time program victory No. 1,199 and it was head coach Delice Downing’s 99th victory at Hutchinson.

The Dragons improved to 12-9 overall and are 3-3 in the Jayhawk. Pratt 4-14 overall and 1-5 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons play host to No. 5 Barton at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Proctor led the Blue Dragons with a season-high 21 kills. She also had three blocks.

Galey followed with a season-high 16 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Precious Johnson had eight kills and three blocks.

Sophomore middle blocker McKenzie Murphy had a season-high four solo blocks and seven total blocks to lead the Dragons, who had nine team blocks.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson had 37 assists and two ace serves. Freshman setter Ellie Suber had 14 assists, six kills and four ace serves.

Freshman liberal Addy Foster finished with 15 digs while freshman defensive specialist Siani Sanchez had seven digs.

SET 1: A Proctor ace serve gave the Blue Dragons an early 9-5 lead. Back-to-back Galey kills gave the Dragons an 11-8 lead. Trailing 18-17, a Proctor kills, Bea Carvalho ace and Murphy solo block gave Hutchinson a 20-18 lead. Another Murphy solo block upped that cushion to 23-20. Pratt scored the final five points of the set, the last three on Hutchinson attack errors to stun the Dragons 25-20.

SET 2: The Blue Dragons trailed Pratt 11-10 and took control of the set with an 8-1 run. A Proctor kill capped that run for an 18-12 lead. A Galey kill gave the Dragons a 22-13 lead and a Suber kill on set point tied the match at 1-1 as the Dragons pulled away for a 25-18 victory.

SET 3: Pratt built a 7-4 lead with prompted a Dragon timeout. The Dragons responded with a 7-0 run that included back-to-back Suber ace serves and three Galey kills to give Hutchinson an 11-7 lead. Proctor’s kills upped the Dragon lead to 17-12, but Pratt pulled within 17-15. The Dragons immediately went on a 5-2 run and finished off the set with a Murphy solo block for a 25-19 win.

SET 4: Tied at 12-12, the Dragons started to pull away with a Proctor kill and a Proctor/Murphy double block. Leading 17-14, a Johnson kill, Carvalho ace and a Pratt attack error bumped the lead to 20-14. The Dragons pulled away from there to close out the match.
