Vikings Split with Irish at Home

LINDSBORG, Kan. – The Smoky Valley basketball teams had their first home games of 2026 on Tuesday night, hosting the Chapman Irish.  The Chapman girls jumped out to an early lead on their way to a 20-point win, while the Viking boys used a hot start on their way to a 31-point victory, moving to 4-0 at home this season.


Girls-Chapman 45, Smoky Valley 25– Chapman took advantage of early turnovers from Smoky Valley to build a 9-3 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 23-12 at halftime.  The Irish created their most separation with a 16-5 third quarter to take a 39-17 lead into the fourth.  The Vikings did outscore them 8-6 in the final quarter.  Freshman Natalee Brown led Smoky Valley with seven points, while Kamryn Ryan matched her season high with six.  Chapman’s Jai Rogers was the only double figure scorer in the game, finishing with 15 points.  Smoky Valley is now 1-6 on the season, while Chapman got back on the winning track after two straight losses, moving to 7-3.

Boys- Smoky Valley 63, Chapman 32 – In a reverse of the girls contest, Smoky Valley was the team to get out to the early start and never look back on the boys side.  Despite missing some early opportunities from the free throw line, the Vikings were still able to take a 17-7 lead after the first quarter and used an 18-7 second quarter to take a 21-point lead into the locker room at halftime.  Things were close to even in the third as Smoky Valley outscored Chapman by just one, but a 14-5 fourth quarter allowed them to pull away for the win.  Kristian Ryan led all scorers with 15 points for Smoky Valley, while Kaleb Burgardt scored seven quick points in the fourth quarter, finishing with a career high 11.  Chapman was led by Talon Decker with seven points.  With the win, the Vikings improved to 4-3 overall and 4-0 at home.  Chapman fell to 0-10.
