HOISINGTON, Kan. – In a rematch of games played on January 13 in Lindsborg, Smoky Valley traveled to Hoisington on Tuesday night. The Cardinals swept the Vikings in the first matchups, but the second time around, defense was the theme as Smoky Valley got a win on the girls side and took a tough loss on the boys side.
Girls-Smoky Valley 41, Hoisington 27 – Smoky Valley held a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter and went on a 12-0 run to take a 15-point lead late in the first half. They would stretch their lead to as many as 20 on two separate occasions in the third quarter and went on to the 14-point victory. The Vikings held the Cardinals to just nine first half points in the defensive battle. Kat Blanchat finished with 13 points for Smoky Valley to lead all scorers. Kenzley Haxton added 11 as Smoky Valley won their sixth game in eight tries, moving to 6-8 on the season. No players scored in double figures for Hoisington as they were led by Ellie Crawford and Kinley Wilkens with seven points each. The Cardinals are now 5-9 this season.

Boys-Hoisington 37, Smoky Valley 31 – In a very low-scoring first half, the Cardinals held a 5-4 lead after one quarter and were up 14-8 late in the half when Ty Heitschmidt made a deep three-pointer to cut the deficit to three at 14-11 for Smoky Valley. The Cardinals outscored the Vikings 8-4 in the third quarter, taking a 22-15 lead after three. Smoky Valley scored more points in the fourth than the first three quarters combined, topping Hoisington 16-15 in the final frame, but it wasn’t enough in the end. The story of the 4th quarter was Marcus Ingram for Hoisington as he scored nine of his career-high 11 points in the final eight minutes, including 7-7 from the free throw line. Mason Martin led the Cardinals with 12 points as they won their fifth straight game, moving to 8-6. Smoky Valley dropped to 3-11 with the loss. Heitschmidt scored a game-high 18 for the VIkings.
