Viking Sports Roundup: Boys Tennis Win Hillsboro Meet & Runners-Up at Home, Track Competes in Marion & Pre-State Meets

LINDSBORG, Kan. – This edition of the Smoky Valley Viking Sports Roundup will recap Vikings sports between April 7-11, which include Boys Tennis, Track & Field, Baseball, and Softball.


BOYS TENNIS

The Boys Tennis team had two varsity tennis meets a week ago, starting off at home Tuesday, April 8 for the Ron Dahlsten Tennis Classic. The team finished 2nd overall out of eight schools, finishing just two points behind Hesston. Following that meet, the team traveled to Hillsboro, winning the invitational in dominating fashion. The Singles tournaments had athletes in the top four, with Crew Elliott finishing 4th in the #1 Singles bracket and Isaac Ayala finishing 3rd in the #2 Singles tournament. Both Doubles tournaments finished with Smoky Valley on top, with Baker/Baker in the #1 tournament and Bieker/Keller in the #2 tournament.


TRACK & FIELD

The Track & Field teams had a busy, but successful week at the Marion Relays and the Shocker Pre-State Challenge over the past week. The week featured 34 new personal records and a new school record.

The Marion Relays were April 11 and saw multiple top-five finishers. The girls team had multiple athletes with multiple terrific finishes. Zora Carver finished 3rd in the 200M Dash and 5th in the 100M Dash. Emma Chaput finished 2nd in the 3200M Run and 4th in the 1600M Run. The 4x100M and 4x400M Relay teams each finished 2nd. Braylon Olson on the boys team finished 2nd in the 400M Dash and their relay teams each finished in 4th.

The teams took to Wichita for the Shocker Pre-State Challenge afterwards. Braelyn Whittaker had a terrific day, finishing 2nd in both the 100M and 200M Dashes. Esther Clark Pavlovich set a school record in the 3200M Run with 11:29.71, finishing in 9th. The 4x800M Relay team finished in 3rd. Trista Spiller finished 4th in the Triple Jump and Ceely Friesen finished 4th in the Pole Vault.

BASEBALL

The baseball team had two doubleheaders, playing on the road against Hesston Tuesday, April 8 then at Hillsboro Friday, April 11.

The team started off against the Hesston Swathers, but fell in both games 7-4 and 22-15. The second game combined for 19 hits, but 24 walks. Smoky Valley had the lead in game two 12-7 after four innings, but then Hesston scored 15 in the 5th and 6th innings.

The second doubleheader featured Hillsboro. The Vikings got their first win of the season in game one with a 7-5 victory. The team trailed 4-2 after six innings, but they scored five innings in the 7th inning to run away with the win. The team lost in game two in extra-inning walk-off fashion, losing 11-10 in eight innings. Hillsboro had the bases loaded in the 8th inning with no outs. They struck out for the first out, but hit an RBI single right after.

The team is 1-5 on the season, but they will look to turn it around on the road Tuesday, April 15 against Larned.


SOFTBALL

The Viking Softball team saw nearly the same results as the baseball team.

They faced Hesston Tuesday, April 8, but fell in both games 17-2 and 10-0. Both games came in run rule fashion, as game one only took three innings but game two took five. The second doubleheader against Hillsboro saw Smoky Valley earn their first win in game one, winning 17-6 in five innings. The team trailed 5-1 after three innings, but the Lady Vikings scored seven in the 4th and nine in the 5th, capitalizing on 13 Hillsboro errors. However, the team fell 14-12 in game two of the doubleheader.

The Softball team is 1-5 on the year as well and will face Larned on Tuesday, April 15.
