MEDICINE LODGE, Kan. – Needing a win to keep pace with Conway Springs in Class 1A District 7, Trinity Catholic instead saw Medicine Lodge snag a crucial district win Friday, 16-14.
Trinity fell behind 7-0 early but answered on Drew Dechant’s 70-yard touchdown pass to Kaid McElgunn.
The game turned defensive the rest of the way, and Medicine Lodge grabbed a narrow 10-7 lead at halftime on Dominic Vieyra’s 25-yard field goal.
That lead increased to 16-7 in the third quarter. What was nearly a disastrous special teams miscue for Medicine Lodge turned into a touchdown, as Carter Cunningham picked up a bobbled punt snap, rolled right and completed a long pass to Jace Cox for a 60-yard touchdown.
Trinity came back in the fourth quarter on Dechant’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Eric Armour, but the Celtics wouldn’t score again.
The loss moved Trinity to 2-1 in district play, even with Medicine Lodge, which has the tiebreaker. Trinity next plays Friday against Sterling.
