SEDGWICK – The Trinity Catholic defense held Sedgwick to 11 first downs and 267 yards of offense, and they also notched a safety, as the Celtics earned their first win of the season Friday, winning 23-8 at Sedgwick.
Although Sedgwick quarterback Holden Ferralez threw for 203 yards, he completed just 15 of 34 passes. Roberto Guerrero had an interception for the Celtics, and Isaac Hammersmith was a pest all game, unofficially recording three quarterback sacks.
Quarterback Drew Dechant led a balanced Trinity offense by completing 10 of 14 passes for 152 yards and two long touchdowns. He added 38 rushing yards.
Kaid McElgunn got the Celtics on the board on their first offensive snap, running around the left side 47 yards for a touchdown. He finished with 125 rushing yards on just seven carries.
By the end of the first quarter, the defense added points when Adrian Baca sacked Ferralez in the end zone for a safety.
Dechant’s 68-yard bomb to Bentyn Chastain with 6 minutes, 58 seconds in the second quarter gave the Celtics a 16-0 lead at halftime.
The Celtics’ penalty woes – they committed 13 penalties for 105 yards – and fumbling six times and losing two helped keep Sedgwick in the game. Ferralez then hooked us with Owen Luper for a 34-yard touchdown, and the two-point conversion cut Trinity’s lead in half to 16-8 early in the third quarter.
Dechant and Chastain helped settle the Celtics down with 2:48 left in the third quarter, when Dechant threw a screen pass to Chastain, who then zoomed 40 yards for the game’s final touchdown.
Lawson Dowsey was 3 for 3 on his extra-point kicks.
Trinity improved to 1-1 and will head to Remington next week. Sedgwick falls to 0-2.
