Trinity Catholic Boys’ Rally Stopped Short at Wellington

The Trinity Catholic boys had a sensational comeback Tuesday on the second day of the Cheney Cardinal Classic in Wellington. Trailing by double digits most of the game, the Celtics came back and led by one point late, but Wellington stopped the comeback and won 43-40.

The Celtics also fell Monday 72-26 to Pratt, which means the Celtics will play in the 12:45 game Saturday in Cheney.

Tuesday, Trinity had a hard time getting the offense going. At halftime, the Celtics mustered just 14 points and trailed by 10.

The deficit got worse in the third quarter, and Trinity again struggled, scoring eight points. But things turned around quickly in the fourth quarter.

Trinity’s defense started getting some turnovers, and soon, the 3-point shooting came alive. Cameron Kiser, who had a game-high 11 points, drained a 3-pointer. Lawson Dowey followed up with another. When Kiser sank another with about 2 minutes left, Trinity had its first lead at 40-39.

But Wellington answered with a couple of Cole Zeka free throws, and a Cooper Hatfield steal and layup.

Trinity had a few shots in the final seconds to tie it, but couldn’t get one to go in.

Dowsey had 10 points against Pratt to lead the Celtics (1-3).

Trinity girls fall twice – The Trinity girls, playing without starters Eilley Cost (illness) and Alex Suter-Tan (knee), had a positive start Monday against Pratt, but went scoreless in the pivotal second quarter in a 56-26 loss.

Anika Paulsrud continued her bright start to the season, scoring nine points, It was the third straight game Paulsrud led the Celtics in scoring.

Against Wellington, the reigning Class 4A state champion and top-ranked team in 4A, the Crusaders’ length, speed and defense smothered the Celtics in a 77-17 loss. Ciena Maskill had her best game of the season with 12 points.

Trinity will next play at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cheney.
