STERLING, Kan. — Midland University defeated Sterling College, 98-77, in the Gleason Center on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Sterling College was led by a 42-point effort from its bench, but could not overcome Midland’s 68.4 field goal percentage.
Sterling opened the first half with strong scoring inside the paint, totaling 14 points. Joseph Oparaeke contributed with an early layup to give the Warriors a brief lead, 6–3. Despite efforts from Julian Smith and Ziri Blackwood, Sterling struggled to maintain momentum, with Midland countering with eight successful 3-pointers.
Midland’s outside shooting helped them pull away, turning a tie into a lead they would not relinquish. Sterling managed to keep pace in scoring off the bench with 20 points, but Midland’s defensive rebounds and quick transitions led to fast-break opportunities. The half concluded with Sterling trailing 46–35.
Sterling faced a challenging second half as Midland quickly extended their lead. Smith initiated a brief surge for Sterling with a layup followed by a successful 3-pointer, reducing the deficit early. However, Midland responded with efficient scoring, including a layup by Nick Dolezal and a fast-break layup from Jake Orr, which widened their advantage.
Sterling struggled to regain momentum, despite contributions from Ethan Wiley, who hit two 3-pointers. Smith remained active, adding points with a layup and a tip-in late in the half. However, Midland maintained their scoring pace, closing the half with a 52-42 edge, leading to a 98-77 victory over Sterling College.
Blackwood scored 22 points, including three 3-pointers, and added two assists. Smith led the team with 24 points, converting all five of his free throw attempts, and recorded a team-high six rebounds. Monem Abboud and Wiley each contributed six points from two 3-pointers.
Sterling (1-3) will open up the conference season against York University (2-4) in the Gleason Center on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m.
