
STERLING, Kan. (SCWarriors.com) – Sterling College baseball season came to an end in the Warrior’s senior day series against McPherson College. Sterling won game one in which was played in Sterling, Kan. on Friday, April 25 while losing games two and three which were postponed to Sunday, April 27 and moved to McPherson, Kan. due to weather and field conditions.
Game 1
The Warriors came out with a 7-6 win in the first game against McPherson on Friday.
McPherson struck first with a run in the top of the first inning.
Sterling answered back in the bottom of the second inning with four runs. Austin Santiago started things off, working his way around the base path to take advantage of a wild pitch to get home for the score. Ezavien Campos singled to left center field to bring home Nehemiah House.
Tyler Gates hit a sacrifice fly out to left field to bring home Joshua Garcia, who was pinch running for Jospeh Almanza. Luis Morales finished things off with a single to right field to bring home Campos and give Sterling the 4-1 lead.
The Warriors extended their lead in the bottom of the third with two more runs. House started it with a single to right field to bring in Jackson Parmenter for the run and Santiago scored on a hit from Campos to push the lead to six.
The Bulldogs battled back with another score in the top of the fifth, to close the gap 6-2.
Campos extended Sterling’s lead with a single to right center to bring home Santiago again and put the Warriors up 7-2.
McPherson slowly crawled back into the game adding runs in the top of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings but ran out of steam as the Warriors took the 7-6 victory.
Jace Phillips started things off from the mound for the Warriors. He pitched seven innings, surrendering three hits, which resulted in three runs, walking six batters and striking out four. Eric Villa came in to relief. He pitched one innings, giving up two hits which resulted in three runs, two earned.
Trenton Canaan got the save for Sterling, pitching the final inning, only giving up one hit and walking one batter, neither of which resulted in a run.
Campos led the Warriors with three runs batted in.
Game 2
McPherson came back swinging in the game two, the first of a doubleheader on Sunday, April 27 in McPherson, Kan. which led to a 25-1 seven-inning win over the Warriors.
The Bulldogs set the tone in the top of the first with the two-run home run from Jared Kramp to put McPherson up 2-0.
Parmenter answered back with a sacrifice fly out to center field to bring home Gates for the run and close the gap, 2-1.
From there on out it was all McPherson, with scores in all of the following innings including a big nine-run innings in the top of the third and a five-run inning in the top of the sixth which led to the eventual 25-1 win for the Bulldogs.
Aaron Alvarado pitched two and two-third innings, surrendering five hits which resulted in nine runs, six earned, while walking five batters, striking out two and giving up two home runs.
Nate Heffline came in for relief, he was unable to record an out, surrendering two hits which resulted in six runs and walking one batter.
Troy Sackett came in and pitched two innings, he gave up four hits which resulted in four runs, walking three batters and striking out four while giving up one home run. Reid Heidtbrink followed Sackett pitching two-thirds of an inning. He surrendered three hits which resulted in five runs, walking three batters and striking out one.
Tyreek Sherman finished off things for the Warriors pithing one and one-third innings. He gave up one hit which resulted in one run, walking one batter and striking out two.
Game 3
Sterling lost the final game of the series, 8-2.
McPherson got on the board first with a double to center field from P Starr two bring in two scores in the top of the first. The Bulldogs extended their lead with single-run homers in back-to-back innings in the top of the third and fourth, putting McPherson up 6-0 after the top of the fourth.
The Warriors battled back in the bottom of the fourth. Campos got things started off with a single through the left side to bring home Santiago. Sterling then filled the bases allowing Campos to score when Andrew Dutro was walked closing the gap 6-2.
The Bulldogs were able to extend their lead with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to put McPherson and eventually give them the 8-2 win.
Aaron Elsasser started things off from the mound. He pitched four innings, giving up four hits which resulted in six runs, walking three batters and striking out two. Villa came in as relief and pitched two innings. He surrendered three hits, which resulted in two runs and walking one batter.
Canaan finished things off in the final inning, he gave up zero hits and walked zero battles.
