McPHERSON, Kan. (MacBulldogs.com) — The McPherson College Bulldogs swept the doubleheader this weekend against College of Saint Mary, picking up a 4-3 win in extra innings in game one before grabbing a 10-2 run-rule win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE – MC 4, CSM 3
Jordyn Johnson pitched a gem in the first game, throwing nine innings with 10 strikeouts, while allowing just two earned runs.
The Flames grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the opener, then pushed their lead to 2-0 in the fifth.
MC loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, before cutting the lead in half on a batted ball by Alyvia Quintana. The Bulldogs leveled the score in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Tatyana Alvarado, scoring Jasmine Montoya and sending the game to extra innings.
Saint Mary once again took a one run lead in the top of the eighth, and the Bulldogs matched thanks to a sacrifice fly by Quintana.
In the ninth, the Flames looked to take the lead again, but a strong throw by Shey Storesund from centerfield kept CSM off the board. Storesund then scored in the bottom of the inning with an outstanding display of base running on a foul out by Kaitlyn Sarsfield.
The Bulldogs scored four runs on seven hits, and benefitted from a pair of Saint Mary errors. Karisa Hernandez finished with two hits and a run scored, while Quintana drove in two runs.
GAME TWO – MC 10, CSM 2
In the nightcap, the Flames again took a 2-0 lead, but from there the Bulldogs scored four runs in the third to take the lead for good.
Sarsfield got the big inning started with a leadoff single to centerfield, then stole second. Sarsfield scored on an RBI single by Alvarado. Quintana drove in Alvarado with a single to centerfield, then Alexandrea Garcia scored on a wild pitch.
Andrea Solis wrapped up the third with an RBI double to right field, bringing Quintana around to score.
The Bulldogs weren’t done there though, adding one more in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Quintana was responsible for the tally in the fifth, launching her second home run of the season.
MC finished off the run-rule win with four more in the sixth. A single by Rowdy New scored Alvarado and Hernandez, then a triple by Garcia brought New in. Garcia scored on a passed ball to close out the game.
Five Bulldogs finished with two hits, including Alvarado, Garcia, Quintana, Megan Wright, and Sarsfield. Quintana drove in two runs. Alvarado and Sarsfield each stole two bases.
The Bulldogs open conference play Tuesday (Mar. 12), traveling to Hillsboro, Kan. to take on Tabor College. First Pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
