Sofia Spies 2nd in Singles, Buhler Girls Team 5th at 4A Girls State Tennis Tournament

Buhler High School senior Sofia Spies placed second in singles at the Kansas Class 4A state tournament Saturday afternoon and the Crusader girls tennis team placed fifth with 17 points.

The 4A state tournament took place in Prairie Village.

Spies, who also finished runner-up in singles in 2024, lost to Wichita Collegiate’s Hitha Ganganala 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match. Ganganala finished the season with a 26-1 record.

Spies, who finished the season with a 27-7 record, defeated McPherson’s Maryn Sandbo 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Spies defeated Independence’s Sarah Veile 6-2, 6-0 in the first round and Wichita Collegiate’s Natalia Saad 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.

Buhler’s Gabriella Gillespie, who finished the season with a 20-13 record, lost to Topeka Hayden’s Grace Funk 6-1, 6-0 in the first round.

She defeated Chapman’s Josie Baer 8-6 in the consolation round and lost to Chanute’s Ella Guernsey 8-4 in the consolation quarterfinals.

In doubles, Buhler’s Emily Allen and Kylee Bradshaw, who finished the season with a 23-14 record, received a first-round bye.

Allen and Bradshaw lost to McPherson’s Lleyton Kuhn and Alexandria Rodriguez 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.

Allen and Bradshaw defeated Clay Center’s Annalea Hendrickson and  Avery Kinderknecht in the consolation round 8-3 and lost to Hesston’s Elyse Griffin and Sage Bartel 8-3 in the consolation quarterfinals.

Wichita Collegiate captured the 4A girls state tennis title with 43 points. McPherson placed second with 36 points, followed by Topeka Hayden 19 and Independence 18.
