Seventh-inning rally lifts Monarchs to win at Derby

The Hutchinson Monarchs scratched out a pair of seventh-inning runs Friday, breaking a tied game, and the Monarchs notched a big Jayhawk Collegiate League win by beating the Derby Twins 5-4.

Tied 3-3 after six innings, the Monarchs quickly rallied in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Drew Bugner walked. Joey Senstock and JJ Spafford were then both hit by pitches, loading the bases. Tyler Mitchell followed with a walk, scoring Bugner and giving the Monarchs the lead. With two outs, Jeter Worthley singled home Senstock.

Derby got a run back in the eighth inning, but Russell Copous pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.

Riley Dickey earned the win for the Monarchs, pitching four innings of relief, giving up two runs on four hits.

Each team mustered seven hits, but Derby committed four errors.

Worthley and Blake Bradford had two hits each. Bradford had a double.

The win improved the Monarchs to 14-4 overall and 13-4 in league play. They lead Derby by 2 1/2 games and Great Bend by 1 1/2 games The Monarchs return home at 7 p.m. Saturday for another game with Derby.
