STERLING – After playing Sterling tight in the first half, Trinity Catholic made a few uncharacteristic errors on Friday at Sterling College, as the undefeated Black Bears pulled away for a 34-12 win.
The Celtics, who finish Class 1A District 7 runner-up to Sterling, played well in the first half. After falling behind early in the first quarter after Wyatt Newberry 46-yard touchdown, the Celtics answered with 11 minutes, 8 seconds left in the second quarter when Roberto Guerrero hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Drew Dechant. The extra-point kick missed, and the Celtics trailed 7-6.
Zane Farney’s 60-yard touchdown run with 4:35 left in the first half upped Sterling’s lead to 14-6. But on the final play of the first half, Dechant had one of his plays of the season. From the Sterling 15-yard line, Sterling brought pressure, and nearly had Decant sacked, but he wriggled free, ran to his right, and fired a touchdown pass to Sam Vogel, as the Celtics trailed 14-12.
The Celtics had the ball to start the third quarter, but after a short punt, the Black Bears scored on Newberry’s 23-yard touchdown run.
Sterling added fourth-quarter touchdown runs from Logan Isaac, from 55 and 22 yards, the latter coming after a Trinity fumble, one of two lost fumbles the Celtics had.
Dechant finished with a season-high 13 completions on 19 attempts for 130 yards..
Farney finished with 136 rushing yards for the Black Bears.
