Season Ends for Haven Boys with Sub-state Loss to Cheney

The season ended for the Haven boys with a 64-47 loss to Cheney in the Haven 3A Group II sub-state Thursday night. Haven finished the season with an 11-13 record.

“Well not the post I want to make but I’m beyond proud of the guys this season,” said Haven boys coach Dwight Roper on the Haven High School Men’s Basketball Facebook page. “Lost tonight to Cheney 64-47 and ended the season at 11-13. There are so many things I’m proud of and enjoyed in my first season that go way past the wins and losses.

“I look forward to leading these guys next year and in the future. Thanks to my two assistants for everything they did this season. Also, thanks to our two seniors (Jace Martin and Devin Boice), know you always will have a place in my heart! Thanks to our managers for all your help. Thanks to everyone who cheered and supported these guys on all season long. Go Cats.”

In a Haven boys 3A sub-state B game Thursday at Hesston, the Swathers defeated Council Grove 64-23.

Hesston improved to 22-2. Council Grove finished the season with a 5-16 record.

In the other Haven sub-state game B, Wichita Trinity defeated Garden Plain 46-23.

In the Haven 3A boys sub-state A bracket, Caney Valley defeated Halstead 54-34.

Halstead led 9-6 after one quarter and 15-14 at halftime. Caney Valley outscored the Dragons 24-5 in the third quarter and 16-14 in the fourth quarter.

Reece Carmichael led the Halstead Dragons with 7 points. Noah Brantley and Mario Diaz each scored 6 points, Damien Whillock 5, Wyatt Hobbs 3, Jackson Wendling 2, Jacob Bennett 2, Carlos Martinez 2 and Greyson Swift 1.

Carmichael had 3 assists and 3 steals. Brantley grabbed 8 rebounds.

Payton Darden led Caney Valley with 16 points and 8 rebounds.
