Maize scored two defensive touchdowns on Friday at Gowans Stadium, and the Hutchinson High offense never got on track in a 56-19 loss.
It was Hutchinson’s first loss of the season after solid road wins against Andover Central and Valley Center.
The Salthawks turned it over three times, while Maize didn’t have a turnover. They also had just eight first downs and 161 yards of offense.
Maize opened the scoring on its first possession, marching 77 yards in seven plays and scoring on a Pearce George 2-yard touchdown catch from Brayden Myovela. The Eagles scored three more first-quarter touchdowns, including one on an interception return. Lamar Govain scored Hutchinson’s first-quarter TD on a 30-yard pass from Robert Hunter.
Maize continued to dominate the second quarter, and led 49-7 at halftime. Drayden Hippen and Larry Jeremiah scored on fourth-quarter touchdowns, both from Hunter passes.
Maize continually made use of short fields, scoring five touchdowns on drives of 51 yards or less.
Hutchinson (2-1) will return home next week to play Salina South.
