Salthawks Jump on Salina South Early

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson High football team made quick work of Salina South on Friday at Gowans Stadium.

The Salthawks needed just eight seconds to score their first touchdown, and they added seven touchdown drives, four of which lasted one play and another two plays, as they blasted South 57-14.

Terrell King opened the scoring by returning the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. By the end of the first quarter, Hutchinson led 14-0, as Kade Smith caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Robert Hunter.

Zion Burgess’ 68-yard touchdown run made it 21-0, Hunter’s 21-yard touchdown run upped the lead to 28-0, and Hunter’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Devon Spiller gave the Salthawks a 35-0 lead before a late second-quarter touchdown cut the Salthawks lead to 35-7 at halftime.

Burgess, Smith and Jeremyah Gaitho-Karanu added second-half touchdown runs.

Burgess led Hutchinson with 138 rushing yards on just 11 carries. Smith added 53 yards on three carries. Hunter completed 5 of 8 passes for 71 yards.

The Salthawks finished with 359 yards of offense compared to 205 for South.

The win improved the Salthawks to 3-2, and they head to next week’s game at 1-4 Campus.
