The Hutchinson High football team came back from last week’s lopsided loss to Maize, by beating Salina South 35-13 on Friday at Gowans Stadium.
Senior quarterback Robert Hunter had a big game, as he completed 13 of 24 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns. Larry Jeremiah Jr. was Hunter’s prime target, as Jeremiah snagged six passes for 158 yards and a touchdown.
The Salthawks outgained South 360-205 and won the turnover battle 3-1.
South hung in there well into the second half, trailing 21-13 with 5 minutes, 16 seconds left in the third quarter. But the Salthawks answered, with Hunter hitting Jeremiah on a 14-yard touchdown pass. Jeremiah Gaitho Karanu added a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Hunter also had first-quarter touchdown passes to Lamar Govain and D’Angelo Gray, while Eli Atha had a second-quarter touchdown run.
The win improved the Salthawks to 3-1, and they moved into fourth place in the Class 5A West standings. They’ll travel to Derby next week.
