Salthawks Advance on In Emporia, Will Face Kapaun in Friday’s 5A Semifinals


EMPORIA, Kan. – Hutchinson boys basketball improved to 22-1 following an impressive 84-51 win over Pittsburg in the opening round of the 5A State Tournament played Thursday at White Auditorium in Emporia.


The Salthawks jumped out to an early 21-8 advantage and never looked back. They shot the ball well, finishing over 55% from the field and connecting on nearly 50% of their three-point tries.


Julian Smith led Hutchinson off the bench with 22 points. He was one of four Salthawks to score in double figures.

With the win, Hutchinson will make its 18th appearance in the Semifinals on Friday and will face Kapaun Mt. Carmel, also 22-1, at 8 p.m. The Crusaders knocked out Blue Valley Southwest, 58-48, in the opening round. The other boys’ semifinal will feature Highland Park and Andover at 4 p.m.
