The Hutchinson High girls golf team came in sixth place on Tuesday at the Salina Central Invitational. The 18-hole event was played at Salina Municipal.

The Salthawks were one of three teams to finish with a 403 and were one stroke away from finishing fourth. The Salthawks matched with Salina South and Hays.

Ava Burlie led the Salthawks with a 16th-place finish, carding a 93. Lydia Patterson was the next best Salthawk, coming in 25th with a 99.

Also playing for the Salthawks were Brynn Hall (104), Kara Cape (107) and AJ Gooch (120).

Hutch will next play Thursday at Mariah Hills in Dodge City and Auburn Hills in Wichita.

Football – Despite a dominant performance from the defense, the Hutchinson offense was stuck in neutral, and a special teams miscue contributed to a 7-3 season-opening loss to Eisenhower on Friday in Goddard.

After a scoreless first half, the Salthawks took the lead on Taysen Runyan’s 36-yard field goal. But a blocked punt early in the fourth quarter resulted in an Eisenhower touchdown.

Hutchinson had 21 first downs to just six for Eisenhower. Zion Burgess led the Salthawks offensively with 166 yards rushing.

The Salthawks will play their home opener Friday against Newton.

Volleyball – The Salthawks split two matches at an AVCTL Division 1 triangular on Tuesday at Salina South. The Salthawks started out the day with a hard-fought three-set loss to Salina South, falling 25-19, 22-25, 25-10. But the Salthawks answered with a strong three-set win over Campus, winning 25-19, 22-25 25-20.

The Salthawks stand at 4-5 headed to a tournament on Saturday at Maize.

Cross Country – The Salthawks competed at the JK Gold Classic on Saturday at Clapp Park in Wichita.

The boys finished in 12th place out of 14 with 348 points. Sahid Rodriguez led the Salthawks with a 79th-place finish in a time of 20 minutes, 21.5 seconds. Ethan Hancock finished one spot and three seconds behind.

On the girls side, Avery Tecklenburg came in 64th place in a time of 24:27.85.
