The Hutchinson High girls soccer team continued to play well against some of the best opposition in the Wichita area, although wins have been hard to come by.
Tuesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex, the Salthawks fell 5-4 to Class 6A power Maize, which is off to a 6-2-1 start this season.
Azul Maciel scored a pair of goals, while Rhyan Galyon and Lisa Selgrade added goals. Hutchinson led 1-0 and 4-3 but Maize answered both times.
The Salthawks fell to 4-5-1 and 1-3-1 in their last five games., but those five opponents – Goddard, Valley Center, Andover, Andover Central and Maize – are a combined 33-10-3.
The Salthawks next play Thursday at home against Campus.
Baseball – The Salthawks climbed over .500 Tuesday by sweeping Salina South at Hobart-Detter Field, 12-0 and 5-4.
Cole Bleything pitched a three-hit, five-inning shutout in the first game as the Salthawks won by mercy rule. Lakin Franz had a big game at the plate, going 2 for 2 with four RBIs, three coming on a bases-clearing double.
The second game was tougher, as the Salthawks mustered just one hit, but four South errors helped the Salthawks.
Softball – The Salthawks opened a busy week with their first win of the year, beating Buhler in the first game 10-9. Buhler came back in a wild second game, posting a 24-23 win.
Tuesday, the Salthawks were swept by Salina South, 19-1 and 19-5. They stand at 1-13 headed to Friday’s home doubleheader vs. Goddard.
Girls swimming – Led by a strong day from AJ Gooch, the Salthawks placed third at a home meet Tuesday at the YMCA.
Gooch won the 100-yard breaststroke, the only event win for the Salthawks.
Gooch also took fourth in the 100 freestyle, and she was on the third-place 200-yard medley relay, along with Morgan Most, Julianna Stivers and Emma Buller. Gooch was also on the fourth-place 400 freestyle relay team, along with Stivers, Most and Buller.
Stivers also placed second in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.
Track and field – The boys team won five events at a meet Friday at Garden Plain. Quincy Smith won the 100-meter and 200-meter, while Quentin Loveless took first in the 400.
Daniel Boone also took first in the triple jump, while the 400-relay team was victorious.
On the girls side, 11 entries had a top-six finish, led by runner-up finishes from Alyssa White (high jump), Kyndra Gaines (discus) and the 3,200 relay team.
Boys golf – The Salthawks came in sixth place out of 21 teams at a tournament April 11 in Newton, finishing with a team score of 346.
Mitchell Rice led Hutchinson with an 18th-place finish, carding an 83.
Boys tennis – The Salthawks finished with four points and came in ninth place on Saturday at McPherson.
