Girls golf – The Salthawks hosted a Class 5A regional on Monday at Carey Park Golf Course, and the Salthawks took advantage of the familiar surroundings, finishing regional runner-up and qualifying for the state tournament next week at Emporia Municipal.
All four Salthawks placed in the top 10 individually, led by Ava Burlie’s sixth-place finish with a 94. Lily Rodriguez finished ninth with a 98, and Lydia Patterson and Brynn Hall both finished in 10th place with 99s.
The Salthawks finished with a 390, 15 strokes better than third-place Salina South.
Girls tennis – The doubles team of Ayla Booe and Ellie Foos qualified for the 5A state tournament on Friday, as the duo came in third place at the Salina Central regional.
Booe and Foos were seeded fourth and battled to the semifinals, getting a thrilling quarterfinal win over Newton’s Charlotte Kost and Margaret Oswald, 1-6, 6-3, 10-7. After a semifinal loss, Booe and Foos won the third-place match by injury default.
They will compete in the state tournament, which starts Friday in Andover.
Boys soccer – The Salthawks saw their nine-match undefeated run end Thursday in a 2-1 loss at Derby, but the Salthawks started a new win streak on Tuesday, beating Maize 2-0 at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.
Hutchinson improved to 10-2-1 and remained in the the hunt for a top-four seed, which would guarantee home-field advantage in regional play.
Volleyball – The Salthawks went 3-2 at a tournament on Saturday in McPherson.
The Salthawks started the tournament with a pair of tough three-set losses to Garden City and Garden Plain, but the Salthawks came back strong with three wins, including straight-set wins over Nickerson and Wichita Heights, and a three-set win over Salina South.
The Salthawks followed the weekend with a pair of losses Tuesday, falling in straight sets to Maize South and Valley Center.
The Salthawks are 13th in the 5A West standings with one regular-season match remaining.
Cross country – The Salthawks competed at the Salina Invitational on Saturday. On the boys side, junior Lalo Rodriguez led the Salthawks with an 11th-place finish, completing the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 42.27 seconds.
Sophomore Avery Tecklenburg came in 24th on the girls side in a time of 21:43.1.
