Salthawk sports roundup: girls badketopen season with comfortable win

Grace Posch scored a game-high 15 points, and Kaia Smith added 15 points, as the Hutchinson High girls basketball team opened the season with a 50-34 win over Maize on Tuesday at the Salthawk Activity Center.

The Saltahwks buried nine 3-pointers, with Posch and Smith sinking three apiece.

After a tight first quarter, tied 10-10, the Salthawks took control with a dominant second quarter, outscoring Maize 21-3. Seven different Salthawks scored in the quarter.

Boys basketball – Despite 22 points from Terrell King, the Salthawks couldn’t keep up with Maize in a 59-46 loss to Maize.

King made three 3-pointers, but the rest of the Salthawks mustered just one. Maize sank eight 3-pointers, including four from Alan Hanna, who scored a game-high 26 points.

Hutch made just 17 of 47 shots and 8 of 20 from the foul line.

Boys swimming – The Salthawks finished third at a Tuesday meet in Great Bend, scoring 347 points.

The Satlahwks won three events. Logan Most won two individual races, including the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 5.52 seconds), and the 100 freestyle (54.13).

The 400 freestyle team also won in a time of 4:17.04. Jordan Graham, Zae Guillen, Ethan Nichols and Most were on the team.

Boys wrestling – The Salthawks went 1-4 at the Junction City Blue Jay Duals on Saturday.

The Salthawks fell 63-18 to Junction City, 72-6 to Derby, 53-25 to Shawnee Heights, and 51-24 to Hays, but they ended the tournament with a 48-30 win over Wichita West.

The Salthawks also lost a Tuesday dual, 44-24, to Great Bend.

Girls wrestling: The Salthawks finished 10th place Saturday at the Doug Kretzer Klassic in McPherson, with 78 points.

Ruby Foster and Sophia Zwickl each had fourth place finishes in their weight classes, Foster at 120 pounds and Zwickl at 130.

On Tuesday, The Salthawks dropped a 66-18 dual to Great Bend.
