Reno County Sabres Knock off Host Cardinals at Hoisington Winter Jam

Despite a 27-point effort by Hoisington’s Mason Martin, the Reno County Homeschool Sabres defeated the host Cardinals 60-57 Tuesday at the Hoisington Winter Jam.

Four Sabres scored in double figures, led by Lucas Asberry with 17 points. Colt Smith scored 15 (including three 3-pointers), Samuel Loewen 10 and Jett Smith 10. Joshua Schmidt contributed 6 and Bo Smith 2.

Martin fired in five 3-pointers and made 6-of-9 free throws for the Cardinals. Kobe Craeford added 156 points, including three 3-pointers. Marcus Ingram scored 8 points. The Sabres held Hoisington post player Brody Pfannenstiel to 2 points.

“Hoisington fought back to tie at one point and get it to 3 points but Reno County held them off,” said Reno County coach Mark Nisly. “It was a great game for Luke Asberry, who held Hoisington’s big-time post Brody Pfannenstiel to 2 points. The Sabres withstood an incredible performance from Mason Martin who scored 27 for Hoisington.”

Also on Tuesday, the Ellsworth girls defeated La Crosse 49-32 and the Ellsworth boys defeated La Crosse 42-21.

Reno County plays Class 4A Top 5-rated Pratt at 8 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. The 5 p.m. boys semifinal features Victoria vs. Ellsworth. In the consolation games, Minneapolis plays Hoisington at 5 p.m. and Ellinwood plays La Crosse at 6:30 p.m.

The finals are Saturday: 7th place, 2:30 p.m.; 5th place, 4 p.m.; 3rd place, 2:30 p.m., 1st place, 5:30 p.m.
