Despite a big first quarter from the Trinity Catholic boys, where they led by 23 points, the Celtics saw Remington slowly eat away at that deficit Friday, and Remington stormed all the way back for a stunning 58-53 win.
The Celtics had their best quarter of the season in the opening eight minutes. Their full-court defense swarmed the Broncos, forcing turnover after turnover, and leading to some easy points. Led by Alex Guajardo’s 15 first-quarter points, the Celtics led 29-6 after one quarter.
The second quarter settled down, as Guajardo soon had a career-high 20 points, and the Celtics led at halftime 40-18.
But Remington slowly came back, outscoring Trinity 18-5 in the third quarter and trailed 45-36 after three quarters.
A 9-0 Remington run started the fourth quarter, tying the game. Cameron Kiser’s layup reclaimed the lead for Trinity, and the game went back and forth until the final minute, as Remington’s Sterling Scribner scored inside, giving the Broncos a 55-53 lead.
Remington then hit three free throws to seal the comeback win. The Broncos ended up 16-27 from the free-throw line, while Trinity was just 3 for 4.
Kiser scored 13 points. Peyton Ryan led Remington with 19 points.
The Celtics fall to 3-7 and will travel Tuesday to Sterling to take on Smoky Valley in the first round of the Sterling Invitational. Remington improved to 4-7.
