WICHITA, Kan. – Region VI basketball has their Final Four men’s and women’s basketball teams after Tuesday quarterfinals, and those still standing face a tough test in Wichita.
The 2023 NJCAA Region VI basketball tournament rolls into Friends University’s Garvey Gymnasium Friday and Saturday. Semifinals for both men and women are on Friday, with Saturday hosting the matinee finals.
“Friends University has become a great partner for the Region over the years,” said Mike Saddler, Region VI men’s director. “They have hosted the Division 2 volleyball championships the past couple years and were the host for the Region 6 basketball tournament in 2021.Wichita is a great location for our postseason events.”
The tournament opens Friday on the women’s side, with Dodge City and Coffeyville at 1pm. The second women’s semifinal is at 5pm and features Barton versus Butler. The first men’s semi has Dodge City meeting Butler at 3pm, while Barton and Coffeyville take the court at 7pm in the second semifinal. The women’s final on Saturday is at 3pm, and the men hit the court at 5pm. The top four seeds on the men’s side made it to Wichita, and their games should be barnburners according to KJCCC media members. Saddler agrees.
“The league as a whole on both the men’s and women’s side is as deep as it’s ever been, so anything can happen,” said Saddler.
The winner of the women’s region tourney will head to Lubbock TX for the national tournament March 22-27. The men’s tournament will be at the Hutchinson Sports Arena from March 20-25. Traditionally, Kansas teams compete well at nationals.
“I think whoever goes to the national tournament from Region 6 will have a great chance to be successful at the national tournament,” said Saddler. “There are very few nights off in this league so all of the teams will have been battle tested and have shown they can compete with the best teams in the country.”
