Pickerell Breaks School Record at UNK Invite

KEARNEY, Neb. – Sterling College Swimming competed at the University of Nebraska – Kearney Invite on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7-8. As a team, the men finished fifth while the women finished seventh. The men’s team set five season bests and two personal bests at the meet while Bree Pickerell had a strong showing for the women, breaking the school record in the 1650Y freestyle.

For the men, the team of Gavin Turner, JJ Silmon, Ian Esquivel and Parker Rea finished 12th in the 400Y medley relay with a time of 4:29.88. The same four also competed 200Y medley relay finishing 12th with a time of 2:02.74.

The same group also swam in the 400Y freestyle relay and the 200Y freestyle relay where they again finished 12th in both with a times of 3:59.05 and 1:44.81

In the 50Y free, Rea led the team with a time of 24.32 to finish 18th. Esquivel and Turner also competed in the race 24th and 27th with times of 26.82 and 28.11, respectively.

Rea also competed in the 100Y free where he placed 17th with a time of 54.60. Silmon and Rea both competed in the 100Y individual medley finishing 22nd and 26th with a time of 1:04.05 and 1:08.04, respectively.

Esquivel also competed in the 100Y freestyle where he swam a time of 1:06.22 to place 18th. He also competed in the 200Y freestyle finishing 21st with a time of 2:12.28.

In the 100Y backstroke Silmon and Turner placed 12th and 14th with times of 1:07.09 and 1:13.21, respectively. Turner competed in the 100Y freestyle where he finished 22nd with a time of 1:05.82.

Silmon competed in the 100Y butterfly where he finished 17th with a time of 1:03.80, he also competed in the 200Y backstroke, finishing 12th with a time of 2:34.42.

For the women, the team of Allison ReedBree PickerellAbby Cagle and Elliott Campbell placed 18th in the 400Y medley relay with a time of 4:50.08. The same group competed in the 200Y medley relay, swimming a time of 2:12.55 to finish 19th.

In the 400Y freestyle relay, Cagle, Hilde Heskett, Reed and Campbell competed together, swimming a time of 4:12.82 to place 19th. Cagle, Pickerell, Heskett and Reed came together to compete in the 200Y freestyle relay swimming a time of 1:53.76 to place 19th.

Pickerell broke the school record in the 1650Y freestyle, finishing eighth with a time of 19:29.00 beating the previous record by nearly 10 seconds. She also competed in the 500Y freestyle where she finished 16th with a time of 5:48.25.

Three Lady Warriors competed in the 100Y freestyle. Pickerell led the group with a time of 1:01.72 to finish 28th while Reed and Heskett finished 32nd and 35th with times of 1:03.26 and 1:04.62, respectively.

In the 50Y freestyle, four Lady Warriors competed led by Cagle who swam a time of 27.69 to place 30th. Reed, Heskett and Elliott were right behind her with times of 28.11, 28.94 and 28.97 to finish 39th, 44th and 45th, respectively.

In the 100Y butterfly, Cagle and Elliott placed 28th and 29th with times of 1:14.98 and 1:16.59. Elliott also competed in the 200Y freestyle with Reed finishing with a times of 2:19.02 and 2:26.09 to place 31st and 36th, respectively.

Pickerell and Reed competed in the 100Y backstroke, finishing 24th and 30th with times of 1:08.53 and 1:14.90, respectively. Reed also competed in the 200Y backstroke finishing in 27th with a time of 2:32.55.

The Warriors will be back in action at the Mid-Season Invite on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14-15 in Edmond, Okla.
