LINDSBORG, Kan. – The Central Plains Oilers picked up a doubleheader sweep over the Smoky Valley Vikings to open up the 2024-25 high school basketball season on Friday night.
Girls-Central Plains 48, Smoky Valley 29 – The Oilers jumped out to a 7-1 lead and a three-pointer from Marilyn Soeken at the first quarter buzzer gave them an 18-11 advantage after one. Soeken scored ten points in the first quarter on her way to a 21-point outing. Central Plains used a 14-6 second quarter to take a 32-17 lead into the locker room at halftime. A lower scoring 16-12 second half led the Oilers to the 19-point win. Despite battling some first half foul trouble, senior forward Kat Blanchat led the Vikings with 16 points.

Boys-Central Plains 49, Smoky Valley 29 – Despite having just four practices after playing in the 8-Man DI football state title game, Central Plains held a 14-6 lead after one quarter behind 13 points from Brodie Crites. Smoky Valley got within 21-14 late in the first half, but the Oilers led by ten at the break. A 17-3 third quarter gave them a 42-18 lead heading into the final quarter. Crites finished with a game high 23 points and was the only double figure scorer for either team. The Vikings did outscore the Oilers 11-7 in the final quarter. Ty Heitschmidt led Smoky Valley with nine points.
