CLAFLIN, Kan. – The Smoky Valley Vikings hit the road to take on the Central Plains on Friday night. In the season opener for the Oilers, they got the sweep of Smoky Valley, winning the girls game 49-31 and the boys contest 67-39.
Girls-Central Plains 49, Smoky Valley 31 – The two squads battled back and for early with Central Plains taking a 15-10 lead after one and a 28-20 advantage into halftime. The Oilers led by 12 after an 11-7 third quarter, but pulled away in their fourth, leading by as many as 20 points on their way to the 18-point win. Emery Siemsen led all scorers for the Oilers with 16 points. Fellow sophomore Lilly Hurley added ten points in the win as Central Plains opened the season 1-0. Smoky Valley was led by Illie DeBaere with ten points, matching her career high. The Vikings are 0-2 and will be off until next Friday when they travel to Concordia.

Boys- Central Plains 67, Smoky Valley 39 – Central Plains held a 13-7 lead after one quarter behind eight points from Brodie Crites, which included a 6-12 mark at the free throw line. In the second quarter, Camden Stiles caught fire for the Oilers, cashing in on six three-pointers and scoring 19 of his 22 first half points. In all, the Oilers outscored the Vikings 21-6 in the second quarter to take a 34-13 lead into the locker room. From there, Central Plains extended their lead to 22 after three on their way to the 28-point win.. Stiles finished with a game high 29, shooting 8-14 from three-point land in the win. Crites added 22 points for the Oilers. After scoring a career-high 28 points in the season opener for Smoky Valley, Kristian Ryan picked up two early fouls and was scoreless in the first quarter. However, he went on to lead the Vikings again with 19 points, while Ty Heitschmidt added 12. Central Plains opened the season 1-0, while Smoky Valley fell to 1-1.
