A season-high 90 points sparked the night as five players scored double figures tonight as the No. 20 Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team rolled to a 90-51 Jayhawk Conference victory over the Independence Pirates Wednesday at the Sports Arena.
Freshman KaMyra Barber papered her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds and added six assists. Barber went 5-5 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Katie Duncan scored 15 points to go along with her four assists and three steals. Freshman Whitney Brown added 13 points and went 3-3 from 3-point range.
Sophomore Noelle Anthon finished with 12 points. Freshman Kaia Smith came off the bench to score 12 points to complete Hutchinson’s double-figure scorers. The Blue Dragons outscored Indy from bench production 26-4.
The Blue Dragons used a dominant 28-7 first quarter and balanced scoring effort to pull away early, improving to 16-5 overall and 11-4 in the Jayhawk conference.
Freshman Jamia Taylor had a career-high seven rebounds and added three assists.
Hutchinson shot 45.8 percent from the field (33-72) and out-rebounded Indy 53-32, including 20 offensive rebounds. The Blue Dragons forced 18 turnovers.
Independence was led by Danaiya Stillwell-Smith with 17 points, while Mimi White added 15 points, knocking down four 3-pointers. Nyah Chandler finished with 11 points for the Pirates.
The Blue Dragons pulled ahead with a 28-7 lead after the first quarter, holding Independence scoreless for long stretches at a time and utilizing their second-chance opportunities. Hutchinson allowed just 13 first-half points for Independence.
GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons lead the all-time series with Independence 44-15 overall. Hutchinson had its highest scoring game of the season with 90 points. The Blue Dragons recorded their ninth game of 20 or more assists. This marked their second game with over 50 rebounds.
