HUTCHINSON, Kan. (BlueDragonSports.com) – The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team broke its own single-game scoring record and tied the NJCAA national scoring record on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.
Eight different Blue Dragons scored touchdowns as Hutchinson defeated the Ellsworth Panthers 99-0.
The Blue Dragons complete the non-conference season at 4-0. Hutchinson will open KJCCC play next Saturday against Dodge City at Gowans Stadium. Ellsworth fell to 0-5.
The scoring records for the Blue Dragons were numerous on Saturday:
+ The 99 points scored tied Cisco for the NJCAA scoring record against all opponents. Cisco scored 99 points against Rezolution Prep on Aug. 25, 2018.
+ The 99 points broke the NJCAA record for points scored against an NJCAA opponent, breaking the record of 90 points, originally set by the 2011 Hutchinson Blue Dragons scored against Highland and was matched by East Mississippi against Coahoma in 2013.
+ The Blue Dragons broke their own single-game scoring record, surpassing the old record of 91 scored against Rezolution Prep on September 9, 2017.
Hutchinson now has three of the top 6 all-time single-game scoring games in NJCAA history.
The Blue Dragons also broke the school record for margin of victory of 99 points. That tied Cisco for the NJCAA national record for margin of victory when Cisco defeated Rezolution Prep 99-0 in 2018.
Hutchinson led 24-0 after one quarter and 59-0 at halftime. The 59 points in the first half was the second most scored in single-game history behind the 63 points scored against Rezolution Prep on September 9, 2017 at Gowans Stadium.
The Blue Dragons out-gained Ellsworth 583-100 on Saturday, averaging 10.2 yards per play for the game.
Led by Waymond Jordan Jr’s 175 rushing yards on just nine carries, the Blue Dragons rushed for 460 yards, which tied for the third-most rushing yards in Hutchinson single-game history, matching a 2009 game against Dodge City. Jordan scored a career-high four touchdowns on runs of 18, 53, 34 and 25 yards.
Julius Bolden had a career-high 81 yards on eight carries with a touchdown. Titus Petteway had a season-high 67 yards on four carries with two touchdowns.
Starting quarterback Samari Collier was 4 of 8 passing for 50 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a 58-yard touchdown on Hutchinson’s first play from scrimmage of the game. Back-up quarterback Christian Johnson was 6 of 9 passing for 73 yards with a touchdown. Johnson also rushed for a touchdown and had 39 yards on two carries
Benson Prosper had two catches for 54 yards. Both receptions went for touchdowns of 8 and 46 yards. Dwayne Moorehead had two receptions for 15 yards. Tre Brown had a spectacular 35-yard touchdown reception from Collier in the opening quarter.
Defensively, the Blue Dragons forced seven takeaways – four interceptions and three fumble recoveries – which was the first time the Dragons forced that many takeaways since doing so against Garden City on October 22, 2022.
The Blue Dragons had multiple interceptions returned for touchdowns since three Pick-6’s against Rezolution Prep on September 9, 2017. David Jester had a 35-yard interception for a touchdown with 2:31 to play in the first quarter for a 24-0 lead. Michael Graham had a 61-yard interception return for a touchdown with 9:35 to play in the third quarter that gave the Dragons a 73-0 lead.
Maurice Harrell and JaQuel Mack also had interceptions for Hutchinson. L.J. Lynch, Graham and Sheldon Butler-Lawson had fumble recoveries.
The Blue Dragons had 17 total tackles for loss, including a season-high seven quarterback sacks. Jeffrey Manns and Brady Whitman Had eight tackles each to lead Hutchinson. Marshon Oxley had a team-high two sacks and Demarcus Johnson had four tackles for loss for 28 yards.
GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons are now 9-4 all-time against Ellsworth and have won six games in a row in the series. … The Blue Dragons had their seventh game all-time scoring 80 or more points. … The nine rushing touchdowns scored against Ellsworth are second most in Blue Dragon single-game history. … The Blue Dragons had 813 all-purpose yards (rushing, passing and return yardage), which is fourth most in program history. … The 12 PAT kicks made were second most in single-game history. … The four interceptions tied for fourth most in single-game history. … Waymond Jordan Jr rushed for his third game this season of 170 or more yards. Jordan is the first Blue Dragon with four rushing touchdowns in one game since Tyrell Reed Jr against Dodge City on October 7, 2023.
