— NEOSHO COUNTY CC ATHLETICS RELEASE —
Chanute, KS (GoNeosho.com) – Jim Shaffer joins the Neosho County Panthers with nearly 40 years of experience and over 500 wins as a head coach. Most recently, he spent two seasons at Cheyenne Central High School where he led the team to a 41-12 record and won the 2024 4A Wyoming State Championship.
As a high school head coach, he has amassed an overall record of 514-334, and has received coach of the year honors a total of ten times. In 2017, Shaffer was one of eight finalists to be nominated for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year, and in 2018 he was inducted into the Wyoming Coaches Association Hall of Fame. During his storied career, he has coached more than twenty-five players who went on to play at the collegiate level including five Division 1 players.
Although Shaffer comes to Neosho County from the high school ranks, he is no stranger to being a college assistant. Shaffer spent three years as an assistant coach at two different NCAA Division 1 Schools. During his two years coaching at the University of Wyoming, he helped lead the Cowboys to a Regular Season WAC Championship before leaving to be an assistant coach at NCAA Division 1 University of Northern Colorado. As a coach, Shaffer specializes in post player development, and will be a huge asset as the Panthers look to build upon their success from the 23-24 season.
Shaffer graduated from Carroll College in 1981, and earned his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in 1983. He is married to Teresa Sparks, and is the father to two sons Jordan and Taylor.
