TOPEKA, Kan. – A host of Ad Astra Radio area athletes came away with medals from the KSHSAA 3-2-1A State Tennis Tournament at Kossover Tennis Center over the weekend. Of the 15 state qualifiers from the area that entered the weekend, ten of them earned hardware.
The top finisher from the area came on the singles side as Central Plains sophomore Camden Stiles finished in fourth place. After battling through to the semis, he fell in straight sets to eventual state champion Charlie Gentile of Wichita Collegiate. Stiles battled hard in the consolation match, but eventually fell to Isaac Yourdon of Wichita Classical in three sets, 6-3, 4-6 and 7-4 in a tiebreak.
Jace Darnauer of Sterling finished in fifth place, while Hoisington also brought home two singles medals with Jasper Pawlowski in eight and Brody Rossman took 12th.
In doubles, Gabe Baker and Zeke Baker of Smoky Valley took fifth place, winning their final match over Sebits and Farley of Trinity Academy 9-8 with a 10-8 tiebreak score. Paxton Dody and Peyton Dody of Central Plains took seventh place, winning over Ben Bierstedt and Zac Wohler of Sterling 8-6 in their final match of the weekend. Ty Hammeke and Ethan Schlochtermeier of Ellinwood took ninth, Jack Bieker and Pierce Keller of Smoky Valley finished 11th and Gabe Pawlowksi and Leyton Mooney of Hoisington brought home 12th.
The top finishing area team was Central Plains in fourth with 19 points. Collegiate ran away with the team title, posting 58 points ahead of second place Conway Springs with 24.
